The expansion of telehealth has given patients unprecedented flexibility in how they access care. But telehealth is not a replacement for in-person medicine — it is a complement. Understanding when a virtual visit is appropriate and when an in-person appointment is necessary helps you make the most of both options while ensuring you get the right level of care for your specific health concern.
When Telehealth Works Well
Telehealth is ideal for conditions that can be adequately evaluated through a detailed history, visual assessment, and patient-reported symptoms. Strong candidates for telehealth visits include: upper respiratory infections and sinus symptoms, urinary tract infections, skin rashes (clearly visible via camera), medication management and refills, lab result review, chronic disease follow-up (blood pressure, thyroid, diabetes check-ins), mental health screenings, and GLP-1 weight loss program consultations and follow-ups.
When an In-Person Visit Is Necessary
- Physical examination is required (abdominal pain, chest pain, ear/eye exam, wound evaluation)
- Diagnostic testing must be done on-site (EKG, in-office urinalysis, wound culture)
- Procedures are needed (injections, sutures, foreign body removal)
- Vital signs beyond what a patient can measure at home are needed
- Conditions that may require urgent intervention or emergency evaluation
