How Telehealth Works: A Step-by-Step Guide for First-Time Virtual Visit Patients

Dr. Arpana Pillay

Internal Medicine Physician, Vish Medical

Telehealth has made healthcare significantly more accessible, but first-time virtual visit patients often have questions about how the process works. Is it really as good as an in-person visit? What technology do I need? Will I actually get a prescription? This guide walks through every step of the telehealth experience at Vish Medical so you know exactly what to expect before your first virtual appointment.

Step 1: Book Your Appointment

Booking a telehealth appointment at Vish Medical is straightforward. Visit our contact page or call our office to schedule. Telehealth appointments are available Monday through Friday evenings, with same-day slots often available for urgent concerns. You will be asked for basic information about your symptoms or the reason for your visit.

Step 2: Prepare for Your Visit

Before your appointment, gather any relevant information: a list of your current medications and dosages, recent lab results if applicable, your blood pressure readings if monitoring at home, a list of questions you want answered, and your insurance information. Good lighting and a private space with a reliable internet connection are important for a productive visit. A smartphone, tablet, or computer with a front-facing camera is all the technology you need.

Step 3: Your Video Visit

You will receive a secure link before your appointment. At the scheduled time, click the link to join your visit with Dr. Arpana Pillay. She will conduct a thorough evaluation — asking detailed questions about your symptoms, reviewing your medical history, and in some cases asking you to perform simple physical maneuvers on camera (e.g., examining your throat, showing a skin rash). The visit typically lasts 15–30 minutes depending on complexity.

Step 4: Prescriptions, Lab Orders, and Follow-Up

If prescriptions are needed, Dr. Pillay will send them electronically to your preferred pharmacy — often before the visit is over. Lab orders are sent electronically to your nearest LabCorp or Quest location. Follow-up instructions are provided directly during the call. After your telehealth visit with Dr. Pillay at Vish Medical, you will have a clear plan, any necessary prescriptions, and confidence that your health concern was thoroughly evaluated.
